How to Choose an Elopement Location

Choosing your location is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning to elope.

My best advice is to start with what matters most. Do you care most that it’s easy and convenient? Somewhere special to the two of you? Somewhere with a great view? Something that feels adventurous?

Once you know what matters most, you can narrow your search and find a location that meets your needs!

I’ve seen elopements everywhere from City Hall to the peak of a mountain – there truly is no limit to where you can go!

Choose Your Guest List

Sometimes couples want their ceremony to be incredibly intimate – just the two of you – and your photographer to serve as your witness. And sometimes couples want immediate family, best friends, or someone special to share in the moment.

There is no right answer!

Think about the moment when you promise to love your partner for the rest of your life. Who do you picture around you, supporting and celebrating you? Let this vision guide your guest list choices.

And don’t forget – you can always include the special people in your life in a follow-up celebration after the official elopement!

Logistics to Consider When You’re Planning to Elope

Even the most adventurous, go with the flow elopement needs a little logistics planning. Planning on hiking up a mountain? You’ll need to decide how to transport your dress, who will carry it, and where you’ll change. (I do highly recommend a portable changing tent!)

Working with an experienced elopement photographer (hi, it’s me!) is the best way to make sure every detail is covered and planned for. We’ve seen it all and can help you think through every step.

Telling Your Family About Your Elopement

A lot of couples worry about breaking the news of their elopement to their loved ones. But it doesn’t have to be dramatic!

I recommend writing out the reasons you’re choosing to elope before you have this conversation. Then, be direct and kind. Explain that you and your partner are making this choice because X, Y, Z. (This is where you share those reasons you wrote down.)

Let them know how they can support and celebrate with you – whether that’s a reception, private dinner, or simple spending some time with you one-on-one.

My best pro tip: Be kind but firm. Don’t ask for their opinion (unless you want it) and let them know that you’re not looking for feedback on this decision. Focus on the positives and let them see your excitement!

At the end of the day, getting married is about you and your partner. No one else. But it’s also good to remember that the people who love you just want to celebrate and support you – so make sure they have a chance to do so.
