Smoke Bomb Fun

Every once in awhile I like to try something out of the box. Maybe its a few new techniques or a lens I’m thinking about buying. Last weekend I decided to play around with smoke bombs! Letting the creative juices flow I photographed one portrait session and one couples session.

For those of you interested in smoke bombs for your photos here are a few helpful tips:

  1. The color of the smoke bomb you purchase may end up looking much lighter in color once it is set off. A few weeks ago I tested out red smoke bombs that turned out to be VERY pink. It’s best not to get set on the smoke color and just remember to have fun with it!

  2. Take a deep breath before you set the smoke bomb off. These things smell and that smell can burn. The smoke bombs that I recommend have a 90 second rate. I highly advise taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling while the smoke rises.

  3. Don’t stare at the smoke. If you stare at the smoke you will blink less. This allows the smoke to irritate your eyes and they can start to burn. Instead focus on your actions and poses.

  4. Plan your pose. Know the look you are trying to achieve BEFORE you set off the smoke bomb. For this test I informed my models a sequence of five actions I wanted them to take.

  5. Keep the smoke moving. The smoke will move faster than you. So not to be lost in a cloud of smoke, keeping moving the smoke bomb at a steady pace. Remember smoke rises. For this test I consistently moved the smoke bomb in a zigzag shape.

Above all just remember to have fun! Smoke bombs can be such a fun way to enhance your session. They add personality and add a little jazz to things. I quickly learned that I love working with smoke bombs! I want to give a shout out to these three awesome models who volunteered to hangout with me in 30degree weather so I could test out the smoke bombs. You guys rock! ;)
